Jim Cramer's top 10 things to watch in the stock market Tuesday
The chip stock rout seems to know no end. But earnings from Club names Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo are all better than expected.
Jim Cramer's top 10 things to watch in the stock market TuesdayPublished Tue, Oct 13 20268:53 AM EDTUpdated 2 Hours AgoJim Cramer@jimcramerMy top 10 things to watch Tuesday, Oct. 13 1. The chip stock rout seems to know no end. It started in South Korea again, with the Kospi down 5.5% overnight. Memory names are getting killed. Club holding Micron is down nearly 4%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq is headed for a sharply lower open. There is no way to stick a knife into the circular reasoning gambit. Plus, China memory is making advances. So, the long knives are back out. 2. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan tried to explain why the market swings back and forth so much on the AI trade. At an event in Singapore, Tan said , "A lot of investors have no clue what they are investing in." He added, "[They] set very extreme expectations only to find that it is almost like they are in a casino." It's not demand that is hurting the stocks. It's investor sentiment. Club name Broadcom is down nearly 1.5%. 3. Earnings from Club names Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo are largely good. Goldman is also a Dow stock, and its more than 3% gain is supporting a strong rally in Dow futures. The fact that oil prices and bond yields are down is not helping as much as it usually does, at least when it comes to the broader market S & P futures, which are basically flat this morning. 4. Huge beat for Goldman Sachs . Revenue blew past the consensus by nearly $2 billion, with equities trading power a large chunk of that beat. Investment banking and asset management were also better than expected. It's been a rough few months for this stock, but numbers like these are why I felt confident enough to recommend buying shares ahead of the quarter. Goldman doing Goldman things. 5. Wells Fargo beat on the bottom line but missed on top-line revenue. The stock is down 2%. Net interest income (NII) was a little light for the quarter, though the Q4 guide was slightly stronger and the full-year guide was maintained. Provisions for credit losses were less than expected, with CEO Charlie Scharf calling out a resilient consumer. 6. It's been a volatile morning for JPMorgan shares after the country's largest bank by assets issued a rare earnings-per-share miss. Fixed income trading revenue and expense growth were blemishes. But the bank did raise its NII outlook for the year. Citigroup stock was in the red after EPS and revenue beats. Full-year NII ex-markets up mid-to-high 6% range versus prior guidance of 5% to 6%. 7. Tale of two cities again for Club name Johnson & Johnson's earnings. The drug business was good, led by Tremfya, but the medical devices and technology unit fell short of expectations. Management took up the full-year earnings guide, but shares are down 2%. Keep in mind this one has a habit of trading poorly on earnings day. 8. Bernstein said that all signs point to continued SpaceX growth in broadband and wireless, citing a recent satellite deployment and Starlink's purchase of low-band spectrum. That's bad for the incumbents. The analysts downgraded AT & T to a hold from buy and trimmed their price target. They also cut their PTs on T-Mobile , Verizon , Charter Communications , and Comcast . They kept their hold ratings on those stocks. 9. Truist hiked its Meta Platforms price target to $1,000 from $763, implying almost 35% upside from yesterday's close. Kept its buy rating. Analysts see strong monetization momentum into Meta earnings and are excited by the reception to Muse, its personal AI agent app. The Club name also released its new flagship Muse Wonder model yesterday to great fanfare. Wells Fargo said the model reaches the "AI frontier." Meta is one to own for the long term, even as AI competition is fierce. 10. Barclays raised its price target on portfolio holding Microsoft to $600 from $512 and maintained its buy rating. The analysts said that Microsoft should see "AI benefits for both Azure and the Office franchise (fueled by Copilot)" during its just-ended quarter. They did note, however, that there may be some noise in the numbers due to the company's new reporting structure. Jim Cramer's top 10 things to watch in the stock market Monday
Salesforce landed a double-upgrade, and stock futures are muted to start a busy week of earnings and inflation data.
Jim Cramer's top 10 things to watch in the stock market MondayPublished Mon, Oct 12 20269:06 AM EDTJim Cramer@jimcramerMy top 10 things to watch Monday, Oct. 12 1. Happy anniversary to the four-year-old bull market. There are plenty of reasons to suggest that it cannot last, from geopolitics to sky-high expectations for this upcoming earnings season and data center hostilities. In my Sunday column for Club members, I explained why I'm staying invested anyway. 2. Futures aren't doing much this morning. Oil prices are higher on two developments. The "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine that President Donald Trump announced over the weekend already looks fragile . Also, Iran-backed Houthi militants carried out a deadly attack at a Saudi airport. 3. Busy week ahead. The big banks start reporting tomorrow morning . The September CPI report is due out Wednesday, followed by the wholesale PPI report Thursday. Also, our Monthly Meeting for October is at noon ET Thursday. Sign up to join the Club here . 4. Some interest rate-sensitive stocks, including the utilities and Club name Home Depot , have turned up, as absurd as that is. Utilities are largely owned for their dividend payouts, so the group gets hurt when bond yields look more attractive. However, the sector is up 5.5% from its Sept. 28 low. Home Depot needs lower borrowing costs to drive housing activity. Shares are up 3.4% over the past four sessions. 5. Salesforce was double-upgraded to buy from sell at Bank of America, and the Club stock is up almost 5%. Analysts conceded their past fears about AI-driven disintermediation were overstated, saying they now believe large enterprises will likely deepen their dependence on platforms like Salesforce thanks to AI. The "SaaSpocalypse" has turned out to be a canard. 6. UBS slashed its price target on hard drive maker Western Digital to $470 from $525 and kept its hold rating. While expecting a beat for the September quarter and strong December results, the analyst argued the market is underestimating cyclicality for hard drives and a possible downturn in late 2028 or early 2029. Hurts the broader memory complex, which includes Club stock Micron . The Situational Awareness wake is still with us. 7. A couple of price target cuts for Capital One : JPMorgan went to $227 from $246, while Morgan Stanley went to $267 from $273. Both stood by their buy recommendations on this Club name, though. The analysts strike similar tones, expecting resilient third-quarter results before risks to lower-income consumers from inflation and higher rates show up into 2027. Our thesis on this one is all about the Discover acquisition and the vertical integration to look more like American Express . 8. Evercore ISI started coverage of Robinhood with a buy. The analysts call the online trading platform "very impressive," with a growing product base aiming to become a "one-stop shop" for financial services. Evercore initiated Schwab with a hold. I think Schwab will be relatively unaffected by AI agents switching people into higher-yielding accounts and should be bought. 9. Seaport Research upgraded Mattel to a buy from hold with a $20 price target. The analysts point to media reports about Authentic Brands discussing a $20-per-share, or $6 billion, takeover offer. I continue to believe that Mattel will be bought by Authentic Brands, which owns dozens of names including Reebok and Champion, as well as Shaquille O'Neal and David Beckham lifestyle lines. Mattel's longtime CEO, Ynon Kreiz, left last month to join David Ellison's Skydance . 10. Melius Research raised its price target on Club name Alphabet to $395 from $375. Closely followed analyst Ben Reitzes said Google Cloud is crushing it, but gains in the stock are being held back by its "still murky" Search/Gemini performance. Google needs to re-establish leadership in AI models to see a sustained move higher.
