I’ll be in an unfamiliar part of town, approaching a road I’ve never seen before, and somehow I’m expected to believe a tiny blue arrow knows exactly where I should go. Most of the time, I just follow it and hope I don’t end up making a last-second turn.
That’s why Google Maps’ new Immersive Navigation caught my attention. Instead of making me stare at a basic map, it gives the navigation view a much more detailed, almost real-world look.
I’ve been trying it on my usual drives, and I can see why Google thinks drivers will like it. It makes some roads easier to understand and navigation a little more interesting. But there’s one limitation that quickly takes some of the excitement away.
Immersive Navigation availability may vary depending on your device, location, or region.
Before Immersive Navigation, I’d reach a complicated intersection and immediately start guessing the blue line. Is that the road I need? Do I turn now or after the signal? And why do two roads on the map suddenly look like one? I’ve had enough of those moments where I’m slowing down, glancing at the screen, and hoping I’m right.
Immersive Navigation gives me more context before I get there. Instead of just following my blue friend, I can see a more detailed view of the road, turns, and the surrounding area. That makes a confusing intersection feel a little less like a guessing game.
It’s especially useful when I’m driving to a café I've never visited for a friend's meetup. I can get a better idea of what the road actually looks like before I reach the turn, rather than figuring it out when I’m already sitting at the intersection wondering, “Okay, now what?”
To try Immersive Navigation, open Google Maps -> profile picture -> Settings -> Navigation -> Map display -> Map detail -> 3D, then start driving navigation.
