Here’s what you need to know about the multiple outbreaks affecting the country, and which areas are currently being hit the hardest.
According to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, as of September 18, 3,568 measles cases were reported in the United States this year so far.
More worryingly, nearly 10% of those cases—341 of them—occurred in the previous two weeks leading up to September 18.
The figure is nearly 1,300 more than the total U.S. measles cases reported in all of 2025, and a level not seen since 1991, when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says measles cases reached 9,643.
Speaking of those CDC numbers, if you look at the agency’s official data up to September 18, you’ll see it differs slightly from the John Hopkins’s data. According to the CDC, measles cases for 2026 in the U.S. stand at 3,471 as of September 18. That’s a discrepancy of 97.
